Search warrants suggest a robbery at NASCAR driver Greg Biffle’s home, shortly after his death, may have been an inside job.

Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their two children, aged 14 and 5, were killed when their private jet crashed December 18 near Statesville Regional Airport. A series of troubling events unfolded hours after their deaths were announced, followed by a break-in at the Biffle family’s Mooresville home the night of January 7,  according to WBTV. The outlet reported that newly obtained search warrants executed April 23 at a home in Lincoln County and a business in Mooresville suggest the robbery may have been an inside job, pointing to a woman known to the family who allegedly displayed suspicious behavior during a celebration of life held in their memory.

There were no stolen items recovered through the execution of the search warrants, but several electronic devices were seized from the residence.

Detectives told WBTV the case spans multiple states and involves multiple potential suspects.

“We can’t say they’re not connected, but we’re still investigating,” Iredell County detectives told WBTV.

Surveillance footage showed a hooded individual outside the Biffle home January 7 at approximately 11 pm, and a woman making her way confidently through key areas of the residence, according to WSOC TV. Investigators believe the suspect forced entry through a bedroom door and took $30,000 from a safe, as well as two handguns, some NASCAR memorabilia, and a backpack. Officials said the suspect appeared to know where the security cameras were positioned as well as the layout of the home, inclusive of a close and safe room.

The woman’s apparent familiarity with the home was of particular interest when investigators discovered that a woman resembling the suspect on the camera footage, and identified as a friend of the family, attended a January 16 celebration of life held as a tribute to the family.

WBTV reported that the woman backed out of plans with friends and traveled to Pennsylvania when the burglary images were released.

The search warrant revealed that a suspicious email was sent to the beloved NASCAR driver just one day after his death.

The email said, “I heard you’re dead, rest in hell,” and was sent to Biffle’s account December 19 at 2 am, according to WBTV. The outlet reported that the family’s email addresses, phone numbers, and passwords were changed and their bank accounts were accessed.

Authorities allege that “hundreds of thousands of dollars” were taken from the Biffle family’s accounts through a series of fraudulent transactions in the days and weeks following the fatal plane crash.(RELATED: Greg Biffle’s Loved Ones Reportedly Receive Holiday Card Days After His Death)

Biffle was a well-known driver for NASCAR who had achieved more than 50 wins, including 19 in the Cup Series. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the December 18 plane crash.
