A group of would-be burglars failed to even get inside the liquor store they targeted after the owner installed a new, stronger version of plexiglass.
And it was all caught on video.
The footage from a surveillance camera was obtained by WREG-TV and showed what appeared to be three males in masks and hoods trying to break into the Southwind Liquor store in Memphis, Tennessee, at about 2 in the morning on Monday.
Store owner Boo Weeks told WREG that his store had faced numerous break-ins before he took extra steps to protect the business.
“In the video, you can see him going down and pushing trying to find a weak spot,” said Weeks.
He went on to say that he owns two liquor stores, and one had been broken into nine times.
“I think we’re probably leading the city in break-ins here or attempted with nine, so we had to do something because they were stealing anywhere from 12 to $20,000 a time every time they come in,” he said.
Daniels Sorces with Accent Glass spoke to WREG about installing the plexiglass.
“It’s a clear polycarbonate sheet material. It’s similar to acrylic Plexiglas, but it has some properties to it that won’t let it shatter when impacted with, said in this case, a hammer. It’s actually fairly unbreakable,” Sorces said.
He said there is a high demand for the plexiglass from businesses in the area.
“I get probably two to three calls a week for it nowadays,” he added.
Weeks said his store has lost about $60,000 from break-ins in the last year, and although police have been responsive, he says there’s an easy solution to the crime.
“Don’t let them back out. When they do get caught, they let them back out,” he said. “They’re back doing this two days later. These are kids. Kids are doing it over and over again.”
Police are trying to identify the robbery suspects.
