An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) job posting for special agents is raising eyebrows for its list of major duties, which include carrying a firearm and a willingness “to use deadly force.”

The job posting, listed on the IRS career website for the Criminal Investigation (CI) Division, calls for applicants in all 50 states.

Special agents within the CI division are the only IRS employees authorized by law to carry and use firearms.

Under the ‘major duties’ section of the listing, applicants are advised they must “be willing and able to participate in arrests, execution of search warrants, and other dangerous assignments.”

Additionally, special agents “must be willing to use force up to and including the use of deadly force.”

IRS Armed Agent Jobs

The IRS faced backlash for a nearly identical job posting last summer in the midst of congressional debate over the Democrats’ ‘Inflation Reduction Act.’

The legislation increased the department’s budget by $80 billion and allowed for the hiring of tens of thousands of new IRS agents.

The bill increased the IRS budget nearly seven-fold and, as Forbes reports, will use over half of that budget “for enforcement” and to “get bigger, tougher and faster at collecting, and make them pay.”

An Associated Press fact-check claims that the budget would not result in the hiring of roughly 87,000 agents because they “will not all be hired at the same time, they will not all be auditors and many will be replacing employees who are expected to quit or retire.”

The special agent position pays anywhere between $52,921 and $94,228 per year depending on experience.

Trump: 1.4% inflation

Trump: 0 new IRS agents

Defund the IRS

Republicans, within days of gaining control of the House earlier this year, celebrated passing a bill designed to slash funding to the IRS and nix the new hires.

Representative Lauren Boebert called the move “conservative governance at its finest.”

Democrats have argued the IRS funding and the additional employees and agents would focus on enforcement against the rich. Not the average American.

But a CBO analysis found that the funding boost would result in audit rates rising “for all taxpayers.”

And they’re not simply targeting the rich.

The $80 billion infusion to the IRS will lead to an estimated 710,000 new audits of people making less than $75,000 per year.

By the Biden administration’s OWN WORDS, his 87,000 IRS agents mean 710,000 new audits of people making less than $75,000 per year.

Additionally, the Biden administration is going after Americans who earn just $600 on payment apps like Venmo – resulting in as many as four million new tax forms for small businesses.

CBS NEWS: A new rule from Biden’s IRS “will require anyone earning more than $600 on payment apps in 2023 to receive a 1099-K form. The old threshold was earning $20,000 over 200 transactions.” pic.twitter.com/gJ4ADwhu9C

— RNC Research (@RNCResearch) April 13, 2023

The legislation has not been taken up in the Senate and President Biden vowed to veto it regardless.

The special agents job posting advises that those hired will be dealing with complex financial investigations.
