A transgender writer for the Netflix series Sex Education is launching a stage show about the search for a sperm donor, with the spectacle being promoted as “a rare opportunity to contribute to and witness queer family-making.”
Krishna Istha is a woman who presents herself as male but identifies as neither and uses they/them pronouns.
“First Trimester,” which begins performances in November at the Battersea Arts Centre in London, is being billed as a conceptual piece of theater that will feature Istha interacting with volunteer audience members as part of the search for a sperm donor.
The show will eventually be turned into a Netflix documentary.
Each performance will last three hours, though ticket holders are free to leave before then.
“This groundbreaking performance offers a rare opportunity to contribute to and witness queer family-making,” the Battersea’s official site says.
In the past, Istha has written about the personal search for gender identity.
“I’ve always shunned gender roles: I’m not a woman, and I never want to be a man, and yet I have this colossal need to be both,” Istha once wrote.
“From as young as I can remember, people have called me a tomboy. It’s a term that resonates with me, but not something I necessarily identify with. I feel the same about terms like ‘woman’ and ‘man’. Instead, I like the idea of being an amalgamation of experiences.”
