UN agency accused of providing cover for Hamas after retracting serious allegations: ‘Scared of disappointing your terrorist friends?’

The United Nations agency responsible for supporting Palestinian refugees is accused of trying to provide cover for Hamas.

The UNRWA, officially known as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, released a statement on Sunday accusing Hamas of stealing fuel and critical medical supplies from its compound in Gaza City.

“UNRWA received reports that yesterday a group of people with trucks purporting to be from the Ministry of Health of the de facto authorities in Gaza removed fuel and medical equipment from the agency’s compound in Gaza City,” the group said in a statement posted to X.

“Our staff were compelled to evacuate UNRWA headquarters in Gaza City on a few hours’ notice during the night of Friday, Oct. 13,” the statement continued. “Since then, UNRWA has had no access to the compound and no additional details about the removal of the assets. UNRWA fuel and other types of material are kept for strictly humanitarian purposes—any other use is strongly condemned.”

The UNRWA later deleted the post and claimed it was never true.

In an “urgent clarification” posted Monday afternoon, the agency said that “reports on social media” about its Gaza City warehouse being raided are not true. The statement did not disclose that those “reports” originated with the UNRWA.

“With regards to reports on social media of looting of an UNRWA warehouse. UNRWA would like to confirm that no looting has taken place in any of its warehouses in the Gaza Strip,” the follow-up claimed. “The images circulating on social media were of a movement of basic medical supplies from the UNRWA warehouse to health partners.”

In response, Israel’s official X account, operated by Israel’s Foreign Ministry, suggested the UNRWA retracted its statement to provide cover for Hamas.

“Did Hamas also break into your Twitter account? Or are you just scared of disappointing your terrorist friends?” the account mocked.

Despite the retraction, United Nations and Israeli sources confirmed the raid did occur, according to Israeli reporter Barak Ravid.
