Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said that protesters rammed their car into his after they had a discussion at his campaign stop in Iowa.
Ramaswamy said he addressed the protesters and had a civil conversation with them in Grinnell, but after the interaction, two of them drove their car into his.
He retweeted an account that said the protesters had flipped him off as they drove away and that they had a “Neighborhood Crime Watch” sticker on the back of their car. Photos on social media showed the damage to the car.
A Daily Mail reporter said Ramaswamy was not in the car at the time of the collision and he was unhurt. She added that the damage to each car was estimated to cost about $600 to repair.
A video on social media showed a group of protesters in a heated debate with Ramaswamy about his position about the Ukraine war, but the poster said the protesters who rammed into the candidate were a different couple.
“Had a civil exchange with protestors today, right before two of them then got into their car & rammed it into ours,” Ramaswamy explained. “Those two should be held accountable, but the rest of the peaceful protestors shouldn’t be tarred by the behavior of two bad actors.”
A spokesperson for the campaign said that they filed a report with local police over the incident.
“Things clearly escalated,” said Tricia McLaughlin.
Ramaswamy has been critical of the billions of dollars the U.S. government has spent to back Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself from the Russian invasion.
“I believe in free speech, especially for those who disagree with me,” he concluded. “Violence is never the answer. We will always hold ourselves to a higher standard than the other side.”
