A gay black man was stabbed to death in Brooklyn, and the incident is being investigated as a hate crime after a witness said the suspect got into an argument with the man and his friends because their behavior was offensive to his Muslim faith.
The incident unfolded at a Mobil gas station at about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, according to police.
Surveillance video shows a group of four shirtless men in a vehicle at the gas pump get into a heated argument with another group of men at the station’s convenience store before one man is stabbed.
A witness told the New York Daily News that a friend of the victim was dancing in what appeared to be his underwear when a man criticized them for offending his Muslim faith.
“This guy was dancing in underwear and the suspect was like ‘Why are you dancing in your underwear?’” said 32-year-old Summy Ullah, who said he witnessed the stabbing as well.
Ullah said that one of the men said the dancing offended his Muslim faith.
“From that I think it looks like a hate crime,” he added.
Ullah went on to say that he got both groups to calm down, but one of the men in front of the convenience store continued to record the shirtless males with his cellphone and curse at them. He said that they reignited the argument and that’s when the victim was attacked.
The man was stabbed in the torso and transported to the Maimonides Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
He was later identified as 28-year-old O’Shae Sibley, a dancer.
Sibley’s friend, Beckenbaur Hamilton, told WCBS-TV that he was in shock over his neighbor’s death.
“I’m so angry, really angry and that’s a life lost over a simple thing. They could have argued and could’ve talked and just left. They didn’t have to bring the violence in,” said Hamilton.
No arrests have been made.
The NYPD Hate Crimes Taskforce is investigating the incident.
