A high school student was suspended for five days from a New York school after allegedly attacking a 50-year-old teacher in the classroom, police said.
The student reportedly struck the teacher at Gorton High School, which is located in Yonkers, on Monday, according to Yonkers Police Lieutenant Dean Politopoulos.
The 16-year-old student has not been identified because of her age, but she was arrested on Tuesday after an investigation and charged with second-degree assault, a Class D felony.
WCBS-TV reported that video of the attack was posted to social media and showed a young woman striking a teacher numerous times as she was on the floor behind her desk. That video was posted to the Facebook page of Yonkers Newswire.
The district told WCBS that security officers responded to the incident quickly and intervened. They did not indicate whether the teacher was seriously hurt.
The student also faces expulsion over the incident after a superintendent’s hearing.
The district added that it would not tolerate any physical attacks on the staff members or other students by any student under any circumstance.
A 2022 report from the American Psychological Association found that one-third of teachers said that they had been threatened by students or experienced verbal harassment from students during the pandemic. 14% of teachers said they suffered physical violence from students.
The APA warned that the crisis of violence in the classroom would lead to a shortage of teachers after nearly half of all teachers said they planned to change careers as a result of a lack of school safety. One educator recalled how a school administrator walked away from her while she was bleeding onto her shirt from an attack by a student in Bozeman, Montana.
