Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 90, hospitalized after falling at home — just days after NY Times confirms worrying development

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) was hospitalized Tuesday after falling, the latest incident in a string of health issues for America’s oldest senator.

Feinstein, 90, fell at her San Francisco residence, her office confirmed on Wednesday. She was taken to a hospital, where she was checked out and released after doctors found no injuries.

“Senator Feinstein briefly went to the hospital yesterday afternoon as a precaution after a minor fall in her home. All of her scans were clear and she returned home,” a representative for Feinstein said in a statement.

According to the New York Times, Feinstein tripped over a chair in her kitchen. She remained at the hospital for several hours before she was cleared to be sent home.

It’s good news that Feinstein was uninjured and is otherwise OK. But this latest incident will undoubtedly renew calls for Feinstein to resign.

Just last week, the New York Times confirmed that Feinstein’s daughter, 66-year-old Katherine Feinstein, has been granted power of attorney over her mother’s affairs. The news raised eyebrows and new questions: How can Feinstein continue to participate in legislative affairs as a sitting member of Congress if she cannot handle her own issues without signing over power of attorney?

Meanwhile, Feinstein made headlines last month after video appeared to show one of her aides instructing her how to vote.

Feinstein was absent from the Senate for several months earlier this year after being diagnosed with shingles. The illness was complicated after she was also diagnosed with encephalitis and Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Upon returning to the Senate, Feinstein sadly uttered, “Where am I going?”

Having served in the Senate for more than 30 years, Feinstein has faced intense pressure to resign in the face of her health struggles. She has bucked that pressure and continues to serve. She is not, however, running for re-election next year.
