A German woman went viral on social media after a video showed her dragging a climate activist by her hair away from a protest that blocked traffic in the city of Bottrop.
The video was recorded by Letzte Generation, or “The Last Generation,” a German climate activist organization. It showed other Germans dragging away an activist before a blonde woman dragged a female protester by the hair.
That woman went back to sit in front of traffic but was dragged away a second time.
“Are we the ones who should be targeted when we peacefully take to the streets to draw attention to the fact that civilization is sinking into climate catastrophe?” wrote the climate activists, as translated from German by Twitter.
European media dubbed the woman in the video the “brutal blonde.”
A second video posted by the group at the same protest showed a car swipe an activist lying on the ground and knock him down as it drove past.
“Let’s stand together and take action against this injustice! Let’s become many and remind the government of its duty!” the group added, in German.
One version of the video published by Sky News on YouTube garnered more than a million views in one day.
Police in Recklinghausen said that the activist was injured slightly and that some of the activists were taken into custody. They are also investigating whether the actions of the anti-protesters should lead to criminal charges.
“The Last Generation isn’t protecting the climate, they’re engaged in criminal activity,” said Transport Minister Volker Wissing.
Bottrop is a city of about 117,000 people in the west-central part of Germany.
