Pop singer Lizzo is being sued by former dancers for allegedly fat-shaming them and for other allegations of harassment.
Lizzo, who has been touted as a model for body positivity and fat positivity, was lambasted by attorney Ron Zambrano in the lawsuit filed by three dancers.
“How Lizzo and her management team treated their performers seems to go against everything Lizzo stands for publicly, while privately she weight-shames her dancers and demeans them in ways that are not only illegal but absolutely demoralizing,” Zambrano said.
The plaintiffs accuse the singer of sexual, racial, and religious harassment; assault; false imprisonment; and disability discrimination, among other accusations.
The lawsuit said that one of the dancers was forced to interact with a nude performer while they visited a club in Amsterdam in February. Lizzo is accused of bringing up concerns about a dancer’s commitment to the tour, which was seen as a criticism of her weight.
The lawsuit also alleges that Lizzo’s production company, Big Grrrls Big Tour, ignored claims of harassment against dancers.
“BGBT management treated the Black members of the dance team differently than other members. BGBT’s management team consisted almost entirely of white Europeans who often accused the Black members of the dance team of being lazy, unprofessional, and having bad attitudes,” read the lawsuit.
“Not only do these words ring familiar as tropes used to disparage and discourage Black women from advocating for themselves, but the same accusations were not levied against dancers who are not Black,” the lawsuit continued.
Lizzo has been involved in numerous public controversies involving body positivity. In 2020, reality show physical trainer Jillian Michaels was lambasted on social media for criticizing the singer as an unhealthy model for young people to emulate.
In December 2020, she faced the wrath of the PC police after she admitted that she was trying to lose weight through the use of health shakes. Critics accused her of “succumbing to fatphobia” and participating in “diet culture.”
The singer also made headlines in April when she brought drag queens onto her show in Knoxville in order to protest against a Tennessee law restricting drag shows in the state.
