While accepting an award for being a “breakout” content creator, transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney said trans people and their allies are still facing “extreme” transphobia.
Mulvaney sparked a massive boycott in April when the influencer announced a marketing partnership with Bud Light. Critics vowed to stop buying the beer after a viral video showed a Bud Light marketing executive mocking the company’s traditional customers.
On Sunday, Mulvaney accepted the award for Breakout Creator at the 13th Annual Streamy Awards for online video content creators.
“My life has been changed for the better,” Mulvaney said while clutching the award. “But on the flipside, there’s also been an extreme amount of transphobia and hate, and I know that my community is feeling it, and I know that even our allies are feeling it.”
Mulvaney went on to demand that all the content creators support the LGTBQ agenda.
“I think allyship right now needs to look differently. You need to support trans people publicly and proudly,” Mulvaney continued.
The influencer previously criticized Bud Light for not defending Mulvaney from critics as the boycott dragged on.
The trans boycott has been a costly PR disaster for Bud Light and its parent company, Anheuser-Busch. U.S. sales for Bud Light dropped by more than 20% while the stock valuation for Anheuser-Busch fell by billions of dollars. A poll by Rasmussen found that a majority of Americans supported the boycott against the company over the transgender debacle, while only 30% said they opposed the boycott.
Mulvaney ended the acceptance speech with a reference to the Bud Light debacle and received great applause from the creator audience.
“I’m gonna go have a beer, and I love ya,” the influencer said.
