Comedian Amy Schumer is facing backlash from the left after she posted a meme complaining that Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ activists had abandoned Jews who had supported their causes after terrorist attacks on Israel.
Schumer, who has been outspoken about her liberal political beliefs, posted the meme on a story at her official Instagram account.
“First they came for LGBTQ and I stood up, because Love is Love. Then they came for immigrants and I stood up, because families belong together. Then they came for the black community and I stood up because Black Lives Matter,” the meme read.
“Then they came for me, but I stood alone, because I am a Jew,” it added.
Many on the left lambasted Schumer after someone posted a screenshot of the meme from her account to X. One version garnered more than 27.3 million views.
“Amy Schumer has long been an explicit racist. Then she has the gall to post this White tears nonsense,” replied writer Elias Cepada.
“Amy Schumer is wild for framing herself as an activist for marginalized groups when she has made a career out of saying wildly racist things. I’ve blocked her for her continued bigoted jokes against Latinx people, but somehow I’m seeing her posts everywhere,” responded Héctor E. Alcalá.
“As a queer Black woman, I’ve seen you run from supporting us more than practically or actively helping us,” replied activist Aisha Willis.
“This unhealthy hater who is only famous because of her family, and isn’t a damn bit funny, hasn’t stood up for any of those people and pushed for mandates and is worse than the 1930s Germany guy with a mustache,” responded Erin Elizabeth. “I hope she disappears from the earth shortly. Permanently.”
In 2018, Schumer said that the policies of then-President Donald Trump were such a “nightmare” that she found it difficult to write and perform jokes as a stand-up comic. She also complained that a woman of color should have starred in her latest movie in her place.
Schumer is also the second cousin of Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York.
