Several players on a Pennsylvania minor league baseball team have refused to don custom Pride Night jerseys, prompting the club forfeit their game Thursday, according to a statement
The York Revolution was set to play against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs for the third of six games, according to their public schedule. However the club canceled the contest, a club statement read Wednesday. The Pride festivities are set continue without the game. The club noted the team would resume playing Friday at Wellspan Park and said the players’ actions did not represent the organization.
“To be clear; this action by the players is completely inconsistent with our vision as the Most Welcoming Place in York,” the York Revolution said.
As a token of their “regret,” the Revolution pledged to donate $10,000 to the Rainbow Rose Center, a nonprofit that claims to help the “LGBTQIA+ community” in the area. To further signal their support, the Revolution will host a free “celebration of recognition and inclusion” Thursday where fans will be allowed to participate in batting practice on the field. Pride Night is an annual event the York Revolution have been holding for 10 years, according to the statement.
This announcement comes days after San Francisco Giants players made headlines for writing Bible verses on their rainbow-themed hats.
The Revolution are still scheduled to finish their series against the Blue Crabs on Sunday.
