President Donald Trump is already making excuses for possible midterm election defeats by blaming his fellow Republicans ― but never himself.
“They’re angry at Republicans,” Trump said of voters in an interview with Punchbowl News that aired Friday. “But they’re not angry at me. They’re not angry at me, but they are angry at Republicans.”
As gas and grocery prices remain high and the U.S. fights a war with Iran started by Trump in February, Republicans could face big losses in November.
“I think we’re gonna win, but to be honest, I look at this — not everybody was a bad president. We’ve had good presidents,” Trump told host Jake Sherman. “And even good presidents tend to lose the midterms. So, I don’t know what that is. Other than that, I say we should win easily.”
Republicans are currently defending slim majorities in both chambers of Congress. And Trump has done everything he can to meddle in the upcoming elections. He has lost 21 straight court battles in his effort to obtain state voter rolls.
“If I don’t run, will those people go out and vote?” Trump said during his interview. “And that’s the one thing I can’t tell. I’m going to ask them to. The question is, will they vote? Because a lot of them are very angry at Republicans, to be honest with you.”
“Why is that?” Sherman asked.
“I don’t know, but they’re not angry at me,” Trump said. “They’re not angry at me. But they are angry at Republicans. There’s some areas that are basically Democrat, but they’re Trump, like Pennsylvania. I win Pennsylvania easily. I win other places easily. Look, I won Michigan easily. I did well with Michigan.”
