In April 2026, wallets, purses, and other belongings started disappearing out of cars parked around fitness centers across Fairfax County in Alexandria, Virginia, according to The Alexandria Brief. In late June, the Alexandria Police Department arrested a man who they say was taking these belongings from unlocked cars and using stolen credit cards to purchase gift cards at nearby retailers before the victims realized their things had been stolen.

While cash and credit cards are the obvious targets in wallet theft, your personal identification may be even more valuable in the wrong hands. Documents often found in your wallet, like your social security card, driver’s license, and health insurance card can give thieves access to your identity and finances. If left unchecked, you could be liable for the damage someone else causes in your name.

Must Read

Here’s what to do if your wallet is stolen and how to mitigate the risks of identity theft.

What to do if your wallet is stolen

How you react to a stolen or lost wallet will depend on what you carry in it. Regardless, time is of the essence.

If you report your debit card missing before any unauthorized charges are made, you are not responsible for any of those charges. You’ll be responsible for up to $50 if you report a missing debit card within two business days of an unauthorized charge, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). After two business days, but within 60 calendar days after your statement is sent to you, you’ll be responsible for up to $500 of unauthorized charges. Beyond 60 calendar days, any money in your accounts is unprotected. Someone with your debit card could clean out your account — and possibly any accounts linked to your debit — and you’ll be left with no recourse.

You have more protections with unauthorized credit card charges. You’re only responsible for up to $50 under the Fair Credit Billing Act. However, most credit cards and some debit cards have zero-liability fraud protection, which means cardholders aren’t responsible for unauthorized charges as long as they report it.

Even if you think you just misplaced your wallet, it may still be worth your time to notify your issuers and freeze your cards.

“The good news is that technology has made it pretty easy to notify those credit card issuers,” Paige Hanson, co-founder of SecureLabs and former manager of educational programs at LifeLock, told Moneywise. “I can log into my app, and I can turn all of my credit cards on or off.”

Reporting other lost or stolen cards will take a little legwork, but it’s worth it to avoid the potential consequences. A stolen driver’s license should be reported to the DMV, which can prevent criminal identity theft, when someone uses your driver’s license and name if they get arrested. Lost health insurance cards should be reported to your provider, which prevents healthcare fraud.

All throughout the process, you should be keeping track of any documentation, in case a lender of the police department asks for it. “It is so much easier just to take a screenshot when you do it and save it, than having to go back after the fact and get that information,” Hanson says.

Taking preventative measures

Fraud often hits the unprepared the hardest, whether you neglect to check your credit card statements or leave your wallet in an unlocked car while you’re at the gym. A little vigilance goes a long way to avoid any serious ramifications.

Hanson recommends turning on threshold notifications. This feature, available with most major credit cards, notifies you whenever your account registers a transaction greater than an amount you preset, so an unauthorized transaction doesn’t slip by unnoticed.

Another strategy to mitigate the issues that a stolen wallet can cause is to periodically take inventory of your wallet. “I know what’s in my purse or wallet at any time,” Hanson says — currently three credit cards, her drivers license, and her health insurance card. If your wallet goes missing, you’ll know exactly which documents you need to report missing and replace.

As you take inventory of the cards and documents in your wallet, note the items that you don’t need on a daily basis, but would be troublesome if they went missing. These can be left behind until you need them. “I don’t need my Social Security card unless I’m maybe going to apply for a job and they require it. So, that’s going to go in the safe,” Hanson says.

It’s also becoming easier to leave your wallet at home, with mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Wallet. Additionally, 20 states allow digital drivers licenses through various apps or directly in your mobile wallet.

“More people, especially younger generations, they’re not carrying around the big purse with a bunch of stuff in it anymore,” Hanson says. “Less is more.”
