President Joe Biden went viral Thursday after he tripped and fell on stage at the Air Force Academy commencement.
The incident immediately triggered renewed concerns about Biden’s health. Though his physician says he has the physical fitness required to be commander in chief, Biden is 80 years old, which means any fall is concerning and potentially detrimental to his health.
But the White House quickly found its scapegoat for the fall: sandbags on the stage.
“He’s fine. There was a sandbag on stage while he was shaking hands,” White House communications director Ben LaBolt said.
And upon returning to the White House, Biden told reporters, “I got sandbagged.”
There were, indeed, sandbags on the commencement stage. According to the Associated Press, “Two small black sandbags had been onstage supporting the teleprompter used by Biden and other speakers at the graduation.”
Video of the incident shows Biden walking behind the teleprompter staged to the left of the lectern before falling. If it is true that one of the sandbags initiated the fall, one wonders why Biden didn’t simply walk over the sandbag.
What else happened?
When Biden returned to the White House on Marine One, he reportedly bonked his head on the frame of the helicopter.
Reporter Noah Robertson, who works for the Christian Science Monitor, reported:
[Biden] bumped his head on the doorframe while exiting the helicopter but otherwise appeared spry, wearing a blue suit with a matching tie and trademark aviators. Smiling, waving, and gingerly approaching the pool, he joked “I got sandbagged” in reference to the fall earlier today. Then he skipped once, holding his smile, and kept walking.
Last month, a new ABC News/Washington Post poll found that a majority of Americans believe Biden no longer possess the physical or mental capabilities required of the president.
