President Trump on Sunday presented the Irish Open trophy to winner and friend Shane Lowry and announced he is removing a 15% tariff on Irish whiskey.
Trump received a warm welcome as he arrived to the Irish Open at his Doonbeg Golf Club.
Attendees chanted “USA! USA!” as President Trump walked onto the green.
Trump awarded 39-year-old Shane Lowry the Irish Open trophy after delaying his trip back to the US.
“This was an honor, and Shane played unbelievable,” Trump said.
“I went back last night, and I was watching some of the news and they were showing him… nine putts in a row, and I thought that was his best stuff,” Trump added. “Just one putt after another. I guess it was nine in a row.”
“He also hit the ball really well, too, a lot of other things, but he’s a great guy, and what happened – I shouldn’t say this – but I was with Shane last night, and he’s got an infectious personality. We were talking, Rory was there, a lot of people were there,” Trump said.
“I said, ‘You know, I was supposed to leave this morning — I was supposed to be out of here this morning, but I’m gonna stay and watch Shane win,’” he added.
The crowd went wild after Trump announced he was dropping tariffs on Irish whiskey.
“Everybody’s been bugging me,” Trump said as he announced his decision to remove tariffs on Irish whiskey.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey!” Trump said to cheers.
