Georgia police called to ‘remove’ boy looking for yard work to buy a video game console. The officer bought him the console instead.

A Georgia police officer is being praised for his response to a call to “remove” a young man who was looking to find yard work so he could earn money to buy himself a video game console.

The City of Hapeville Police Department posted on Facebook that Officer Eric Colleran was dispatched to the neighborhood where he encountered a young man who “explained he was in the area because he wanted to do yard work: pulling weeds, cutting grass and trimming hedges to save up for a PlayStation.”

The officer, who is also a gamer, said that he was impressed with 16-year-old Keonte Evans because he was so “polite, respectful and truthful.”

Colleran then sought the help of some of his friends to buy the video game console as well as a gift card to pay for a membership so that he could start playing it immediately.

“Officer Colleran made sure that this young man knew they would play on the same team online soon!” the post concluded.

Police posted a short video of the young man’s reaction to seeing the console and the hug he gave the officer. That video garnered over 34k views.

Evans and Colleran talked to WSB-TV after the story went viral.

“Somebody did this for you. The game is so expensive. You can’t do anything but be so excited. So, I gave him a hug. A big hug at that. A very big hug. It’s so sweet. Many people don’t do these things for kids,” Evans said.

“I didn’t do any of this to end up on the news. I was just trying to help him out and let him understand that if you work hard and are honest, good things will come to you,” Colleran said.

Evans said that he was still looking for a part-time job to help his mom. He added that he has played the video game every day since he received the gift.
