Democratic President Joe Biden took a calamitous fall during the graduation ceremony for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Biden shook the hand of each one of the 921 cadets graduating on Thursday, but he fell to his knees after walking away from the final cadet. He was helped back onto his feet, and he appeared to point to something on the ground afterward.
Ben LaBolt, the White House communications director, said that Biden was fine and that he had tripped over a sandbag that was on the stage.
The fall will no doubt raise questions about Biden’s advanced age and his ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the Oval Office. The president is 80 years old and will be 82 years old on inauguration day if he’s re-elected to a second term.
Even some Biden allies like Hillary Clinton have publicly admitted that concerns over Biden’s health were legitimate.
“It’s a concern for anyone. We’ve had presidents who had fallen before who were a lot younger, and people didn’t go into heart palpitations,” Clinton said in May. “But his age is an issue, and people have every right to consider it.”
Biden himself addressed the concerns but laughed them off with jokes.
“The only thing I bring to this career after my age — as you can see how old I am — but is a little bit of wisdom,” told a crowd of supporters in May.
“I come to the job with more experience than any president in American history,” he added. “It doesn’t make me better or worse, but it gives me few excuses.”
Podcaster Joe Rogan opined that the Democrats’ only hope to win the presidency again in 2024 would be if Biden died and someone else took the reins from him for the nomination.
