The King’s apparent insistence on familiar surroundings fits with a wider reputation for carefully maintained routines – a trait also associated with his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
Charles’ stepson, Tom Parker Bowles offered another glimpse into the monarch’s daily rituals during an interview in October 2023, revealing the importance of afternoon tea.
Parker Bowles told People tea at precisely 5pm was of “primary importance.”
He said: “It’s not just a cup of tea – it’s an entire meal. There are sandwiches, two different kinds of cake, scones, biscuits, shrimp and eggs.”
While afternoon tea occupies a seemingly immovable position in Charles’ schedule, lunch reportedly does not.
Former royal correspondent Gordon Rayner has said the King regards stopping for lunch as a “luxury” which interferes with his working day.
The reported travel arrangements suggest even when Charles leaves his own residences, considerable effort can be made to preserve the surroundings and routines to which he is accustomed.
Camilla is similarly reported to travel with preferred bedroom furnishings, including an orthopedic mattress.
