A new CNN poll shows the majority of American voters do not believe President Joe Biden should be re-elected.
Overall, the poll found that just one-third of Americans, 32%, believe Biden “deserves” to be re-elected. On the other hand, 67% of respondents said he does not “deserve” re-election. Those figures are virtually the same among registered voters; 36% believe he deserves re-election, while 63% do not.
The results are no better among Democrats.
The survey discovered, in fact, that a majority of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independent voters think somebody other than Biden should be the Democratic Party’s 2024 nominee. Only 44% want Biden, while 54% do not.
Among those who want a different candidate, 69% said they don’t care who it is as long as it’s not Biden.
For Biden, the results of the poll are “beyond sobering,” according to CNN anchor John King.
“They tell us many or in some cases, most of you have deep doubts about [Biden’s] performance and about the direction of the country right now,” King analyzed. “It is April 2023, so a very long way to November 2024. So consider these numbers just an early campaign baseline. But it’s an important but they are still quite telling about your mood, and the challenges facing the 80-year-old incumbent.”
Biden has not yet announced his re-election campaign, though he has committed to running again. If Biden wins, he will be 82 years old at his second inauguration.
What about Trump?
The CNN poll also asked respondents about former President Donald Trump.
A narrow majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, 52%, said they hope Trump is the Republican Party nominee for the third consecutive presidential election cycle, while 47% said they hope for a different candidate.
The positive figure has dramatically increased for Trump since December, when just 38% said they wanted Trump to be the nominee again.
Among those Republican and Republican-leaning voters who want a different candidate, 54% said anyone will do while 28% said they hope Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gets the nod.
