Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont announced that he would not run for president in 2024 and endorsed President Joe Biden, who announced his re-election campaign on Tuesday.
“The last thing this country needs is a Donald Trump or some other right-wing demagogue who is going to try to undermine American democracy or take away a woman’s right to choose, or not address the crisis of gun violence, or racism, sexism or homophobia,” Sanders said in an interview.
“So, I’m in to do what I can to make sure that the president is reelected,” he added.
Given the advanced age of the self-identified socialist, it is unlikely that he will ever mount another presidential campaign again.
He also discouraged others from challenging Biden for the 2024 Democratic presidential primary.
“People will do what they want to do,” Sanders said about possible Democratic challengers. “I think Joe Biden will be the Democratic nominee. And my job, and I think the progressive movement’s job, is to make certain that he stands up and fights for the working class of this country and does not take anything for granted.”
Sanders had famously battled against Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic primary but came up short. Some Democrats blamed his supporters for stubbornly neglecting to support Clinton and thereby allowing then-candidate Donald Trump to win the presidency in 2016.
Sanders also failed to win the nomination in 2020 when Biden won and went on to defeat Trump’s re-election campaign. The same internecine skirmish broke out among progressives and mainstream Democrats then.
He also indicated that he was likely not going to seek re-election in the U.S. Senate.
“People in Vermont have not been asking that, only media here in Washington,” said Sanders about his decision whether to run for re-election or not.
