A Texas homeowner shot a burglar who shot his dog during a brazen home invasion in broad daylight.

The incident unfolded in the northeast part of the city of El Paso, at about 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police said that an armed man forced his way into a home with three people and a dog inside. He fired shots during the incident and injured a dog belonging to 37-year-old Sean Patrick Suniga, one of the residents.

That’s when Suniga pulled out his own weapon and shot the burglar, who fled the scene.

Police said that they were called to a separate scene at the intersection of Gateway South and Broaddus Ave. about two miles away and an hour later. They encountered 29-year-old Bruce Wayne Murphy, who was “yelling for help” over a gunshot injury he had sustained.

He was transported from the intersection to a local hospital for treatment.

A press release from the El Paso Police Department said that police believe Murphy is the burglar who shot the dog at the home invasion.

After Murphy is released from the hospital, he is expected to be charged with burglary of habitation and transported to the El Paso County Detention Facility. He will be under a $500,000 bond.

The Animal Cruelty Investigative Unit is also investigating the incident and may press additional charges against the suspect. The condition of the injured dog is unknown.

According to one analysis of FBI statistics from 2017, El Paso ranked as the sixth-safest big city in the U.S. with a violent crime rate of less than four incidents for every 1,000 residents.
