You didn’t get calm under pressure by reading about it. You got it by losing a client and having to make payroll anyway. By pitching, getting a no, and pitching again the next morning.

That capacity to sit in discomfort and keep moving is probably the most valuable thing you own. It’s worth more than any single skill on your resume.

Here’s the part most high-performers miss: you can hand that trait to your kids on purpose. Not by lecturing them about grit. By setting up the same conditions that built it in you.

Losing built the resilience you rely on

Think about where your toughness actually came from.

It wasn’t the deals that closed easily. It was the stretch where nothing worked and you had to keep showing up anyway. The frustration, then the next attempt. That loop, run hundreds of times, is what wired you.

Kids build the exact same way. The problem is that a lot of well-meaning parents, especially successful ones, accidentally remove the loop. You clear the obstacle before your kid reaches it. You praise the outcome, then step in the second they struggle, because watching them fail is uncomfortable.

You’d never run your company that way. You know a team that’s never allowed to fail never gets sharp. The same logic applies at home.

Praise feels kind. Struggle is what actually helps.

Constant praise is the parenting version of a participation trophy culture you’d never tolerate in a business.

When a kid hears “you’re so smart” after every small win, they learn that being seen as capable is the goal. So they start avoiding anything hard, because hard things risk the label. Psychologist Carol Dweck’s research on mindset found this directly: kids praised for effort took on tougher challenges, while kids praised for being smart played it safe to protect the image.

That’s the trap. You think you’re building confidence. You’re actually teaching risk-aversion.

What builds real confidence is a kid attempting something slightly beyond them, missing, and finding out that missing didn’t end the world. They survive the frustration, then find a grip that gets them a little further. That’s the whole mechanism, and it looks almost identical to what got you through your worst quarter.

You learned resilience under pressure. Your kids can too.

The trick is giving a child real challenges they can repeat, ones with a bit of sting in them.

You already know this from your own work: the third failed attempt teaches more than the first easy win ever did. A child who misses the top rung and climbs back up is doing the same work you do after a failed pitch or a lost client: sitting with the frustration and going again. Monkey bars are unusually good at teaching it because the feedback is immediate and honest, and the only way across is to keep trying. If you have the yard for it, a backyard climbing set like Vuly’s Quest monkey bars gives a child a standing, low-stakes reason to attempt something today that beat them yesterday. You are buying your kid hundreds of small, repeatable chances to be bad at something and then get better, which is the one habit that built whatever you have built.

Physical challenge works better than most alternatives here because a kid can’t argue with a monkey bar. There’s no negotiating, no adult to appeal to. Either your hands hold or they don’t. That honesty is rare and valuable. It’s the closest thing a seven-year-old gets to a market telling them the truth.

And unlike a scheduled class, it’s always there. No booking, no coach. They walk out the back door, try, fall, and try again on their own clock. That autonomy matters as much as the challenge itself.

Your job is to set the conditions, then step back

This is the hard part for driven parents. You’re used to solving. Setting up struggle means deliberately not solving.

When your kid can’t reach the next bar and looks at you, the instinct is to lift them. Don’t. Say “try again” and mean it. Let them be frustrated. Frustration is what learning feels like from the inside. Let it run.

The same goes for outcomes. Skip “you’re a natural.” Try “you kept going after you slipped, I saw that.” You’re rewarding the behaviour you want repeated: persistence.

None of this means throwing a kid at something dangerous and walking off. There’s a real line between challenge and neglect, and you’ll feel it. A four-year-old needs closer spotting than an eight-year-old. Some kids need more encouragement to attempt, others need reining in. You know your child. Calibrate the difficulty so it’s hard but survivable, which is exactly how you’d scope a stretch goal for someone on your team.

The trait compounds, same as it did for you

You didn’t become resilient in a weekend. It accumulated, one recovered setback at a time, until handling pressure was just who you are.

Kids work identically. Every time your child falls off the bars and gets back up, they’re making a tiny deposit in the same account you’ve been building your whole career. Do it for a few years and frustration tolerance stops being a lesson and becomes their default.

You can’t give your kids the specific failures that shaped you. You can give them the conditions to build their own version, starting in the backyard. That’s a better inheritance than anything you’ll leave in a will.
