Sean Davis, CEO of right-wing media outlet The Federalist, drew backlash after floating “sterilization of all foreign visitors,” among other wild proposals, to the United States after the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship.
Davis joined a number of MAGA voices proposing extreme measures after the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to uphold birthright citizenship, rejecting President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at overturning the Constitutional right.
The CEO proposed several “ways forward” in a Tuesday post on X.
The options he laid out included, “Deny entry to all pregnant foreigners,” “Deny entry to all female foreigners” and “Require sterilization of all foreign visitors prior to entry.”
He also floated that states could stop issuing birth certificates to noncitizens, and in arguably his most extreme proposal, suggested the “Dissolution of the Union,” adding that a “nation which can’t even restrict who gets to be a citizen isn’t a nation.”
“If you think all these options are not great, understand that that is what happens when unelected judges decide that they are in charge of the country and get to write its laws,” he wrote.
His post came the same day that Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) introduced a bill that would prevent pregnant women who are not U.S. citizens from entering the country.
Like Ogles, Davis was immediately put on blast for his take.
“This whole list is absolute BONKERS,” New York Times columnist David French wrote on X .
He added, “It is absolutely bizarre that these people believe that the continued application of a rule that has existed for generation after generation ― as we’ve grown to the most powerful and prosperous free nation in world history ― is somehow the root of our national demise and so clearly wrong that we need to end the union. Just wild.”
Other critics also had strong reactions — particularly to his “sterilization” proposal.
Davis responded to the backlash in a follow-up post, stating, “that’s what happens when John Roberts tries to cosplay as King Solomon. He somehow only gives us worse and more extreme options than what were previously available.”
In response to the Supreme Court ruling, Trump called on Congress to put an end to birthright citizenship and bypass the judicial branch.
“No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending expensive and unfair to our Country, Birthright Citizenship. They will have my Complete and Total Support!,” he wrote on Truth Social.
