A 21-year-old woman went missing for two months before her body was found tied up in a shopping cart in an alley in Chicago, Illinois.
Rosa Chacon went missing on Jan. 18 after she told her family she was taking an Uber ride and would be back soon.
“She said, ‘I’ll be back mom. I got the Uber ride there and the Uber ride back,’ that’s what she told me,” her mother Rosa Chacon said to WLS-TV.
The family said that she left her coat and her identification at the home when she left.
Initially, the family said that police told them it was likely a runaway case.
“The cop said a crime had to be committed for them to do anything,” said Alejandro Guzman, the boyfriend of the victim.
The family spent months handing out flyers to look for her before they hired a private investigator.
On Friday, her family said that her body was found tied up and covered in a sheet in a shopping cart in an alley off of West 24th Place. The family had to identify their daughter through tattoos on the body.
The victim’s cause of death is yet to be determined by the Cook County medical examiner. Uber refuses to release information about who ordered the ride Chacon took out of privacy considerations.
“Once you check the Uber out, they’ll let you know exactly where she went, the guy who ordered the Uber, because we didn’t have no information,” said the victim’s mother. “But they kept giving us the runaround.”
Community leaders announced a $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.
Jose Lucio, the father of the victim, had a warning for parents.
“Be sure to watch your daughters more closely,” he told WLS. “Don’t trust anybody.”
