Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that he had sent a busload of illegal aliens to Los Angeles, California, and promised to send more until Democratic President Joe Biden secured the U.S. border with Mexico.
“The first bus of migrants from Texas has arrived in Los Angeles. Our overwhelmed border towns are on the frontlines of President Biden’s border crisis & need relief,” Abbott tweeted on Wednesday.
“Texas will bus migrants to sanctuary cities like LA until he secures the border,” he added.
KCAL-TV reported that the migrants would be arriving at the famed Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.
Republican governors have been sending migrants to sanctuary cities in order to bring attention to the plight of border states as the immigration crisis worsens under the lax policies of the Biden administration.
“Los Angeles is a major city that migrants seek to go to, particularly now that its city leaders approved its self-declared sanctuary city status,” Abbott said in a statement attached to the tweet. “Our border communities are on the frontlines of President Biden’s border crisis, and Texas will continue providing this much-needed relief until he steps up to do his job and secure the border.”
The statement said that more than 21,000 migrants had sent to sanctuary cities from Texas under the program approved by Abbott.
On Friday, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to approve an order instituting the city as a sanctuary city and forbidding city employees from working with immigration officials.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, was acidic in his response when Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent migrants to Sacramento, the state’s capital. He called DeSantis a “small, pathetic man” and implied that the governor was guilty of kidnapping.
The California state government declared the state a “sanctuary state” in 2017.
