Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D) employed a bizarre defense of President Joe Biden’s age on Wednesday.
Pelosi, 83, dismissed concerns about Biden’s old age — the president is 80 years old and would be 82 years old on Inauguration Day if he wins re-election — by pointing out that Biden is younger than herself.
“I think the president should embrace his age, his experience, the knowledge that he brings to the job,” Pelosi said on MSNBC.
“Actually, the leader on the other side is not no much younger — I don’t like to use his name, but you know who I mean — he’s not that much younger,” she added, referring to former President Donald Trump, 77.
Describing age as a “relative thing,” the former House speaker tried to normalize the situation by citing the ongoing work of 100-year-old Hollywood producer Norman Leer and 94-year-old architect Frank Gehry, who, according to Pelosi, recently commented to her about Biden’s age.
“They were like ’80? He’s a kid!’ — it’s relative,” Pelosi said before rolling out the mother of all defenses for Biden’s age.
“He’s younger than I am, so he’s a kid to me as well,” she said. “I think that it’s an excuse. I think that it’s not a reason to be — it’s an excuse, and I think that we just have to get on with this election for the children, for the people.”
Interestingly, Pelosi’s comments are a reversal of what she said earlier this year.
In an interview with New York Times writer Maureen Dowd, Pelosi suggested that Biden’s age is a liability for his re-election chances — not something he should “embrace.”
“Is age a positive thing for him? No,” she said.
Pelosi’s new position, though aligned with the Democratic Party’s hopes, is out of touch with American voters. Not only do an overwhelming majority of voters in poll after poll after poll say Biden is too old to run for re-election, but surveys show that even a sizable portion of Democratic voters want another candidate to represent them in 2024 because of Biden’s age.
