A Muslim woman was arrested in Kingwood, Texas, after she beat and choked her teenage daughter for not wearing a hijab and also burned her for not heating up her pita bread properly, according to police.

Harris County prosecutors charged 36-year-old Sittarh Mazhar Khan with assault of a family member, impeding breathing/circulation, and injury to a child causing bodily injury.

Khan is accused of assaulting her 14-year-old daughter after she saw her without a hijab on Instagram, according to a source close to the investigation. A hijab is a religious garment worn by Muslim women to cover their hair.

“The defendant, upset the complainant did not wear her hijab at school, beat and choked the complainant, causing her to lose consciousness,” said a hearing officer at a probable cause hearing Wednesday.

Khan is also accused of burning the same daughter for overcooking pita bread.

The hearing officer said Khan “forced the complainant’s arm onto a hot oven rack, causing her to have three burn marks.”

KPRC said it was unclear how law enforcement was alerted to the alleged abuse and whether the two incidents happened at the same time.

Khan was arrested at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday and booked into Harris County Jail. Prosecutors asked for a $75,000 bond for the woman, but the hearing officer instead gave her a bond of $20,000.

Khan was described in court as a homemaker for over 17 years. She had to speak to the court through an interpreter.

Police said the teenage victim is in the custody of Child Protective Services. Khan is expected in court Thursday morning.
