22 minutes is all it took for all hell to break loose Sunday at the Stade de la Beaujoire.
A soccer game taking place in France transitioned into an outright riot, which forced players to run away for their safety. From there, the contest between Toulouse FC and FC Nantes, who both play in Ligue 1, was abandoned.
A gargantuan mob that featured hooded individuals breached security in the stadium, and ended up storming the field and turning the game into a scene from war. When things went sideways, the match was in a 0-0 tie. (RELATED: America Might Want To Re-Think The Whole ‘Hating Soccer’ Thing After Seeing Sam Sarver’s Epic Beer Chug)
Several angry fans of Nantes were showing their frustration regarding the terrible season the team has had. Stewards were overwhelmed by the supporters as they crashed through barriers set up for security.
Hiding their faces and dressed in black, the fans threw flares and pyrotechnics on the field, leading to scared players from each squad sprinting away from the chaos. The players ran down the tunnel towards the locker rooms for safety, doing so as the field was covered with fans.

Equipped with tactical gear, riot police ultimately made an appearance to put an end to the scene.
Following a standoff, authorities managed to push the fans back to the seats. In a quick matter, both the police and referees made the decision that they could no longer guarantee safety for players, and as a result, the game was cancelled.
The failures regarding security were instantly condemned by the French government’s highest levels.
Marina Ferrari, the Minister of Sports for France, took to social media to hammer the fans, branding their storming of the pitch as “unacceptable.”
Soccer officials in France are being put on the hot seat to ratchet down the hooligan problem that the nation has. It’s anticipated that Nantes will receive punishment that is severe. The club already faces potential relegation.
