Aaron Moten Moves to Lead Actor

“War never changes” is the defining line of the “Fallout” franchise. Amazon is hoping that’s also true for the Emmys.

Amazon is aiming higher for the second season of “Fallout,” revealing exclusively to Variety an expansive Emmy Awards submission strategy headlined by Aaron Moten making the jump from supporting to the lead drama actor race.

The post-apocalyptic drama, which became one of television’s breakout genre success stories following its 2024 debut. In its first season, “Fallout” earned 17 Emmy nominations, winning Creative Arts Emmy Awards for outstanding music supervision and outstanding emerging media program for “Fallout: Vault 33.”

Based on the long-running video game franchise created by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, “Fallout” was developed for television by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Set more than 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse decimated civilization, the series blends dystopian spectacle, dark comedy and emotional character drama, a mix that has made it one of the most acclaimed video game adaptations to date.

Season 2, which premiered Dec. 2025, expands the show’s mythology, placing greater weight on Moten’s Maximus, the Brotherhood of Steel squire whose moral evolution has become one of the series’ defining arcs. Moten competed for a supporting drama actor during the first-season campaign, but ultimately wasn’t nominated.

Three-time Emmy nominee Walton Goggins (lead drama actor for “Fallout” in 2024, supporting drama actor for “Justified” in 2011 and “The White Lotus” in 2025), whose performance as the Ghoul became an instant fan-favorite, will compete alongside Moten. Ella Purnell returns to the lead drama actress race for her work as Lucy MacLean, the optimistic vault dweller navigating the brutal wasteland.

The cast roster of the world continues to expand.

Supporting drama actor submissions will include Moisés Arias, Kyle MacLachlan, Justin Theroux, Xelia Mendes-Jones and Johnny Pemberton. Moreover, Frances Turner, Annabel O’Hagan and Leslie Uggams will compete for the supporting drama actress category.

The guest fields are fairly stacked with Kumail Nanjiani, Macaulay Culkin, Michael Emerson and Ron Perlman vying for guest drama actor, while Dale Dickey and Sarita Choudhury will seek love in guest drama actress.

Notably, Amazon is focused on a sizable crafts campaign that mirrors the production’s scope and ambition. Directors Liz Friedlander and Lisa Joy will both be on the ballot for directing, for the episodes “The Wrangler” and “The Other Player,” respectively. Wagner and Robertson-Dworet are submitted for writing for the season 2 premiere, “The Innovator.”

Since launching, “Fallout” has become one of Amazon MGM Studios’ signature genre properties, helping solidify the streamer’s growing footprint in the sci-fi space. The series was renewed for a third season, months before its sophomore debut, signaling a long-term confidence in the franchise’s awards and audience potential.

With Emmy voters increasingly embracing genre storytelling, as recent recognition for HBO Max’s “The Last of Us,” Apple TV’s “Severance” and Disney’s “Andor” have shown, “Fallout” could be a dark horse player for the streamer.

Emmy nomination-round voting runs from June 11-22, and the official 78th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on July 8.
