April 8, 6:54 a.m.: The University of Oklahoma issued a statement via Twitter canceling the alert at 10:53 p.m. local time. “After a thorough search, no threat was found,” the statement said, in part.
The University of Oklahoma advised students to shelter in place after a report of an active shooter on campus late Friday evening.
“OU-Norman Emergency: There is an active shooter at the Van Vleet Oval. Take immediate action now. Run. Hide. Fight!” read the first tweet.
About half an hour later, the school issued an update.
“OU-NORMAN Emergency 9:45pm OUPD investigating possible shots fired on Norman campus. Avoid South Oval area. Shelter in place,” read a second tweet.
News video and social media videos showed a very large police response to the reports.
Some reports said that there were indications the alert was a hoax and possibly a “swatting” incident.
