California Democrats pass law prohibiting school districts from restricting books on LGBTQ and race issues

The California legislature passed a law that would prohibit any ban on race-related and LGBTQ curricula in public schools on Friday.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, has already signaled that the will sign the law.

Several local communities have fought back against the imposition of far-left studies in schools and the Democrats controlling the state government have responded by lambasting and threatening them.

On Wednesday a county superior court ruled issued a temporary restraining order against a policy by the Chino Valley Unified School District requiring parents to be informed if a child seeks to identify as a member of the opposite sex.

When a school board in Temecula rejected a textbook because it celebrated the life of gay activist and politician Harvey Milk, Newsom accused them of bigotry and discrimination.

“We’re going to purchase the book for these students—the same one that hundreds of thousands of kids are already using,” said Newsom in a statement in July. “If these extremist school board members won’t do their job, we will — and fine them for their incompetence.”

That threat appeared to refer to the law passed by the legislature that will fine school districts for restricting books about the contributions from racial, ethnic and LGBQT groups.

“This bill is just another example of Sacramento stepping in and telling local school districts what they can and cannot do,” said state Assemblyman Josh Hoover, a Republican.

“This bill is government blackmail to our locals,” responded state Assemblyman Devon Mathis, also a Republican.

Newsom issued a statement in support of the law on Thursday.

“California is the true freedom state: a place where families — not political fanatics — have the freedom to decide what’s right for them,” read the statement. “With the passage of legislation to ban book bans & ensure all students have textbooks, our state’s Family Agenda is now even stronger.”
