Dem senator laughs off Hunter Biden attending state dinner 2 days after plea deal: ‘That’s a separate thing’

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) snickered on Sunday when confronted with Hunter Biden’s controversial attendance at a state dinner.

Last Thursday, President Joe Biden hosted a state dinner with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The guest list included both Attorney General Merrick Garland and Hunter Biden, despite the Justice Department announcing criminal prosecution targeting Hunter Biden just two days prior.

The optics were not great. But that doesn’t matter, according to Klobuchar, who was asked on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” whether it was appropriate for Hunter Biden to attend.

After laughing and smiling at the question, Klobuchar replied, “You know, I think, as the president explains, that’s his son. That’s a separate thing.”

The Democratic lawmaker then launched into a full-throated defense of Biden’s plea deal.

“I would like to say about that: that decision was made by an independent prosecutor who is a Trump-appointed U.S. attorney who had 10 years of experience — well respected,” she said. “Philadelphia Inquirer reported that he was a registered Republican.”

“You understand the perception issue of something like that, though,” moderator Chuck Todd pushed back.

Klobuchar acknowledged the optics issue but dismissed issues of state dinner attendance as “not reality.”

“Reality is whether or not someone is going to be able to get their insulin. And the president has made changes. Reality is whether someone has a job. Reality is when they can go visit their grandma again in an assisted living,” she said. “Those are people’s realities, not who is sitting where at a state dinner.”

Last week, Garland denied interfering in the Hunter Biden investigation despite accusations from two IRS whistleblowers.

“He was given complete authority to make all decisions on his own behalf,” Garland said on Friday.
