Florida Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon called Gov. Ron DeSantis’s “Stop WOKE” slogan a “racist dog whistle” that “is just a term that is devaluing black people,” during a 2023 One Take Live interview.
Nixon is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
“We know that you just want to remove woke and replace it with black people,” Nixon said during the resurfaced video, “and look, if Florida is where woke or black people go to die, that’s evident by what just took place on Saturday.”
DeSantis has used the line that Florida is where woke goes to die for the package of education and workplace bills that limited classroom instruction on race and gender, restricted diversity trainings, and pulled some inappropriate books from libraries.
Nixon treated that slogan as a stand-in for Black Floridians.
The candidate said DeSantis “had this attack on woke, this stop woke, because he wants people sleeping.”
She accused him of trying to ban mass protest and of “trying to make it so that people could run folks over in the street if they blocked the street while they were protesting.”
“And if we come into power, they are fearful,” she said. “They’re fearful that if this group comes into power, all these marginalized people, that they’re going to do to what they’ve done to many of us for hundreds of years.”
Nixon also dismissed working across the aisle.
“They’re not trying to work across the aisle. They’re literally trying to kill us, and they are doing it on camera,” Nixon claimed, despite recent high-profile assassinations and attempts against conservatives.

Nixon is a Jacksonville state representative. She beat Alexander Vindman in the August primary.
After Charlie Kirk was killed, she wrote that anyone who backed a remembrance resolution was “a tool of white supremacy,” according to a report from the Daily Wire, and on the House floor she compared a Kirk Day bill to something “brought straight by the KKK.”
