Elon Musk caused a stir on Twitter on Friday morning when he called for any parent or doctor who carries out sex-change surgery on children to be locked away in prison for life.
Last month, a measure by the Florida Board of Medicine that bans the use of puberty blockers, hormone therapies, or gender reassignment surgery went into effect.
There is also a bill advancing through the Florida state legislature that would ban so-called “gender-affirming care” for minors.
Senate Bill 254, which passed through the Florida Senate earlier this month, would criminalize parents or medical professionals who provided sex-reassignment prescriptions or procedures to children. The bill would also prohibit state funds from being used for such treatments.
In January, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis encouraged minors with body dysmorphia to undergo counseling instead of the irreversible action of “hacking off their body parts.”
The Redheaded Libertarian, a popular political commentary account on Twitter, shared an MSNBC article titled: “What’s the matter with Ron DeSantis’ Florida?”
The MSNBC opinion piece bashed the state of Florida, especially under the governance of DeSantis.
The author, Michael A. Cohen, called Florida the “hot mess state” and the “meth lab of American democracy.” He said, “The Sunshine State long ago became a punchline to a running joke, but what’s happening there — and what it augurs for the country — is no laughing matter.”
Cohen described Florida as “the most intolerant and authoritarian-minded state in the country and a disquieting reminder of the descent of the Republican Party into the political sewer.”
The columnist called the governance of DeSantis has been “deplorable” and “hypocritical” with a “policy agenda defined largely by pettiness, cruelty and a disturbing disregard for basic democratic norms.”
The Redheaded Libertarian shared the MSNBC article and mocked liberals for being upset that children can’t change the sex of their children in Florida.
Musk responded to the tweet by writing, “Any parent or doctor who sterilizes a child before they are a consenting adult should go to prison for life.”
Matthew Kolken, an attorney and director of the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s Board of Governors, replied to Musk’s tweet, “Also note, it is a federal crime to perform, attempt to perform, or conspire to perform female genital mutilation on another person who has not attained the age of 18 years under 18 U.S. Code § 116. ‘It shall not be a defense to a prosecution under this section that female genital mutilation is required as a matter of religion, custom, tradition, ritual, or standard practice.'”
Biden’s Department of Health and Human Services states that “early gender-affirming care is crucial” for children and adolescents.
For transgender and nonbinary children and adolescents, early gender-affirming care is crucial to overall health and well-being as it allows the child or adolescent to focus on social transitions and can increase their confidence while navigating the healthcare system.
While being interviewed by transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney in the Oval Office in October, President Joe Biden said that states and people should not have the right to ban “gender-affirming health care.”
