English soccer player Jordan Henderson injured his wrist while celebrating his team’s 3-2 win over Mexico during a Sunday night World Cup game at Estadio Azteca.
Following their win, England was carrying on their tradition of approaching their fans to sing Oasis’ song, “Wonderwall” at the stadium in Mexico City when Henderson climbed over advertising boards, fell on his arm, and remained on the ground, according to The Independent. Medics helped the midfielder before they took him to England’s locker room using a stretcher. Henderson later received care at the hospital.
England Defender Dan Burn confirmed Henderson had fallen over an advertising board, according to ESPN. England manager Thomas Tuchel described Henderson’s injury as “serious.”
“He injured his wrist, he is at the moment in the hospital,” the manager said. “It is a quite serious injury.”

Henderson remained in Mexico City with a medical staffer while the rest of the team returned to their Kansas City base, The Independent reported. While Henderson did not play against Mexico and was benched following an altercation during warm-ups, he joined his team on the group stage.
Midfielder Jude Bellingham and captain Harry Kane helped England claim victory over Mexico, according to Fox News Digital. Bellingham secured two goals 98 seconds apart in the match’s first half, and Kane converted a penalty, giving England a lead of two points over Mexico.
The game was delayed for an hour over thunderstorms, The Independent reported. England’s victory marks their first visit to Estadio Azteca since Argentina beat them in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals.
Mexico has only lost two games at Estadio Azteca in 89 matches since 1966 before England’s victory, according to the outlet. “It was a crazy game. We had to fight,” said Kane. “I can’t really talk, but the occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.”
Henderson became the first male English soccer player to go on the field for four World Cups when he played Panama amid their final stage group match, according to ESPN.
