Former Trump White House attorney Ty Cobb has floated a theory about why Donald Trump isn’t spending his substantial campaign war chest to help Republican candidates in the upcoming midterms.
It’s because Cobb, who served Trump during his first term but is now a vocal critic, thinks the president may be planning to “steal” elections wherever he can.
Trump is “sitting on $400 million in campaign money that he could donate to some of these elections and he’s not,” Cobb told MS NOW’s Ari Melber on Thursday.
“The thinking is that he would rather keep it for his presidential library or other personal interests,” he said.
“But it also plays into a narrative that I think people are undervaluing, which is I think Trump doesn’t feel he needs to spend this money because it is his intention to interfere with the elections and to steal these elections where possible,” Cobb continued.
Cobb said that if the midterm elections “go big-time against” Trump, the president may “perhaps even support” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) “and urge him not to seat democratically elected representatives,” similar to how he pressured his former Vice President Mike Pence to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden.
Melber described the scenario of Trump exerting pressure on Johnson as an “actual constitutional crisis.”
“We had a sedition,” he said, referring to Trump’s unsuccessful efforts after the 2020 vote. “And we know that Trump is pro-sedition because he freed every last one of them,” he added, referring to Trump’s pardons for Jan. 6, 2021, defendants.
“And you’re saying then you can get another constitutional crisis second term where it gets worse,” Melber continued. “And so people have to be ready. The society has to be ready to take that seriously as a prospect.”
