CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten highlighted what he called a “really stunning” polling detail showing that even Donald Trump’s “infatuated” Republican base is turning on him over rising gas prices tied to his Iran war.
Trump is “getting blamed” for the spike more than other presidents have “to an historic degree,” with 77% of Americans saying he “owns this mess,” Enten said.
He then noted how the backlash is also coming from within Trump’s own party.
“Oh my …, this is a Republican base that has been infatuated with Trump for years,” he teased, noting how 55%, a majority of GOPers, currently blame Trump for the hike in fuel costs.
It’s the “highest ever blame for gas prices from one’s own party,” the analyst added.
Trump may argue the higher costs are worth it, but Enten said Americans aren’t buying it.
“Is the Iran war worth higher gas prices? 64% of Americans say no, just a third say yes,” he said, calling them “consistent numbers” in recent weeks.
