Moving house can feel like juggling an almost uncountable number of different responsibilities. At its most basic, though, you still need to make sure that you’re moving your personal belongings from A to B as efficiently as possible, without damaging any of them.

Some of those items are more delicate and precious than others, and it’s important that extra care is taken with these belongings. From identification to insurance, here’s how these precious objects are handled.

Carry Out An Inventory

An early step in most house moves will be to carry out an inventory. While this is necessary no matter what you’re working with, it also gives you a good chance to identify all of the precious objects in your home that you want to take extra care of.

Some of these might be quite obvious, like an old piano or other musical instrument that you play every day. Other precious items, however, might have sat packed away in an attic or back room for a while, and it’s only when you complete your inventory that you’ll notice that these items also need to be handled carefully.

Packing

With precious objects, packing takes on a heightened level of importance.

First, you need to make sure that you have the right materials on hand. That could include acid-free tissue paper, custom-made foam inserts for boxes, and packing blankets.

Next, you need to make sure that you don’t just use those materials in a uniform manner. Each item needs to be treated according to its own vulnerabilities, as the packing technique matters even more than the materials that are being used.

With really precious objects, it’s worth using a removals team like Redpath that also specialises in packing, so that you can be sure you’re getting it just right.

You’ll also want to make sure that delicate items are clearly labelled, so that adequate care can be taken when they’re being moved and transported.

Moving

No matter how well those precious objects are packed, they still need to be moved with adequate care. Heavier, larger items will need to be moved and packed into vans first, with more vulnerable items sitting on top.

Unloading the items at the new property requires equal care. The team will need to work well together, to make sure that everyone knows where precious items end up and that nothing gets accidentally damaged.

Insurance

Even with the most foolproof systems in place, accidents can occasionally happen. To make sure that you’re covered in these worst-case scenarios, you’ll need to make sure that you have some kind of insurance policy in place.

Most removals companies have insurance already, but you’ll want to make sure that their policy is sufficient to cover your valuables. In some cases, it might be necessary to take out another insurance policy on top.

Taking care of your precious objects during a house move takes a bit of effort, but it shouldn’t be too hard. By just finding and hiring an experienced removals company, you’ll already be doing a lot to set yourself up for success.
