Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has long predicted that Donald Trump could walk away from the White House by Easter 2027, following what he believes will be a bruising GOP defeat in the 2026 midterm elections.
And on Thursday, he stood by that prediction, while explaining why he doesn’t believe Trump stepping down before the end of his term is part of some elaborate scheme.
Carville was asked by a listener on his “Politics War Room” podcast whether Trump leaving office could be a “diabolical” trick to circumvent the 22nd Amendment, therefore allowing Trump to argue he has not served his full terms and can run again in 2028.
But he dismissed the idea, saying a fourth Trump presidential campaign isn’t something people need to worry about.
“I’m watching him as a person that is 81. I’m watching him in real time, and I think this man is deteriorating physically and emotionally at a rate that’s exponential. It’s not linear,” he said.
Carville argued that what he described as Trump’s decline (Trump has not been diagnosed with any condition) would be “accelerated by the fact that after November he is going to be dealing with something he hasn’t dealt with in his time in politics; he’s going to be irrelevant.”
He argued, “He’s not just going to be irrelevant. People are not going to want to be around here. They’re not ― not going to care what he has to say.”
He added, “They’re not even going to want to affirmatively hear it. To the extent that I have any ― everything I know, I still believe he will walk away prior to April.”
