Martha Stewart mocks backlash to climate change outrage over her iceberg cocktail

Martha Stewart responded to online backlash against her social media post that offended sensibilities about climate change.

The lifestyle entrepreneur was vacationing in Greenland on a cruise when she posted a photograph of a cocktail that had ice chipped off from a piece of an iceberg.

“End of the first zodiac cruise from @swanhelleniccruises into a very beautiful fjord on the east coast of Greenland,” she wrote in the post. “We actually captured a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight.”

She was immediately assailed by critics in the comments, who called her elitist and tone deaf to the victims of global warming.

“I generally love Martha and the excesses of her life because [s]he’s about beautiful gardens, homes, and food, but wealthy white people drinking their iceberg cocktails while the planet is in flames is a bit tone deaf,” wrote one person.

Stewart has since responded in another Instagram post.

She posted a photograph of an iceberg and wrote, “pleated iceberg. Perfect for cocktails!”

Stewart added the link to a Washington Post article about the controversy in which a glaciologist from California defended her.

“It is not like she went to a glacier and carved a piece of ice off it,” Eric Rignot said to the Post. “Icebergs float at sea already and slowly melt. Whether they melt in the ocean or in your glass does not make a difference.”

Climate critics assailed Stewart in her other posts from her vacation.

“Please don’t use an endangered whale or seal to make any elitist meals like you did with the disappearing iceberg,” read one response.

The Greenland ice sheet is estimated to contain more than 2.9 million cubic kilometers of ice.
