Melania Trump isn’t known for her standup comedy skills, but she got the crowd cackling on Wednesday at a White House event honoring military mothers.
But it wasn’t a joke or a story that made attendees giggle; it was one single word she attributed to her husband, President Donald Trump.
The first lady praised her husband to attendees, saying that while “most know my husband as the strong commander-in-chief,” his “empathy transcends the role and shape of a caring leader, who constantly remembers each and every American soldier is someone’s child.”
Yes, you read that correctly: The first lady claimed her husband possesses the ability to understand and relate to people other than himself.
Considering that “empathy” is a trait that is rarely, if ever, associated with Trump, it’s not surprising that the crowd started laughing when Melania used the word to describe him.
As you can see in the video, Trump shrugged at the mention of the word and the resulting laughter, and even his wife couldn’t keep a straight face.
To be fair, Trump has publicly shown empathy to people, but, as George Conway, pointed out in November, it was towards characters like Vladimir Putin, Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted Jan. 6 insurrectionists, and the neo-Nazis who marched in Charlottesville.
Wednesday’s “empathy” clip has since gone viral on social media and, of course, people had thoughts.
Melania Trump’s description of her husband’s empathy wasn’t the only strange moment at the Wednesday event.
At one point, Trump got off-topic about the purpose of the event ― to celebrate military mothers ― in order to excitedly talk about his plans for the proposed White House ballroom.
