A Muslim pundit who frequently appears on MSNBC tried to blame Republican propaganda for his imam’s comments against the LGBTQ community at his mosque, and he was widely ridiculed on social media.
Wajahat Ali, an author and activist, tweeted about the shocking comments on Friday.
“Finished my Friday prayer at my local mosque where the imam prayed we would be saved from ‘the LGBTQ in our homes.’ Democrats are underestimating how pervasive GOP CRT & trans fear messaging/ propaganda has taken hold in religious communities & suburbs,” Ali wrote.
He went on to say that some religious communities are being “used by hateful groups” on the LGBTQ issue.
“And a good reminder a majority of Muslims are pro abortion rights and marriage equality in America. But disinformation and fear mongering go a long way when cloaked under terms of ‘religous freedom’ and ‘parental choice,'” he added.
Many on social media laughed at his assertion and responded with mockery.
“It’s the GOP’s fault that the imam in the mosque you frequent has socially traditional views?” responded Noam Blum.
“Ahh yes the religion of Islam has always been historically pro LGBTQIA and has only recently been turned sour by *checks notes* REPUBLICAN PROPAGANDA,” mocked another critic.
“The Republicans were so effective because they started their work early, in the 7th century,” read another tweet.
“Is it possible Muslims come to their own conclusions based off their own religious jurisprudence and they are not just victims of a GOP plot?” replied journalist Zaid Jilani.
Ali responded to some of the mockery in a later tweet.
“Nice to see this thread brought out the trolls who are into pluralism and open minded discourse as evidenced by their support for a racist vulgarian and bigoted policies. Again majority of Muslims in America support abortion rights and marriage equality – and CRT fear is working,” Ali added.
Ali previously made headlines in June when he scolded Muslims who were speaking out against the LGBTQ agenda. He was assailed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which disagreed with his assessment.
“Instead of addressing the substance of the concerns that these families have raised about what’s happening public schools, the likes of @mehdirhasan and @WajahatAli paint these parents as dupes being used by the political right,” responded CAIR deputy director Edward Ahmed Mitchell.
“This is ludicrous,” he added.
