NFL Super Bowl champion head coach Sean Payton signed an extension with the Denver Broncos to stay on as their coach through the 2030 season, according to ESPN. The financial details of Sean Payton’s contract have not yet been released.
Payton, 69, is coming off a 2025 campaign in which he led the Broncos to a 14-3 record and an appearance in the AFC title game, which they played without their second-year breakout star quarterback Bo Nix due to a freak injury incident. (RELATED: Russell Wilson Set To Join CBS Sports: REPORT)
“Sean Payton has led an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons, instilling a winning culture with high expectations,” Broncos owner Greg Penner told ESPN. “I appreciate the close partnership he shares with [Bronco General Manager] George Paton along with the alignment and stability across our football operations.”

The Broncos traded a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick for the rights to Payton’s contract, then held by the New Orleans Saints. At the time, the deal was seen as risky, as Payton had taken a year off from coaching to join Fox Sports. The trade didn’t immediately pay off, as Payton went 8-9 in his first season with the Broncos, but he has increased his win total in each of the last two years, seemingly cementing the Broncos as contenders for years to come.
While in New Orleans, Payton was at the center of the franchise’s “Bountygate” scandal. An NFL investigation alleges that Payton attempted to cover up a scheme where then-defensive coordinator Gregg Williams organized cash bounties for Saints players to target and knock out opposing players from games. The investigation ultimately led to Payton’s suspension from coaching for the entire 2012 season.
Payton is only 11 wins away from having the fifth-most head coaching wins in NFL history according to ESPN.
This move comes only a day after the divisional rival Kansas City Chiefs re-signed star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
