Transgender activists and their allies were outraged after President Joe Biden announced a policy pullback about transgender athletes in schools.
The White House released a statement Thursday saying that schools would be allowed to ban students from participating in sports not meant for the gender of their birth. The policy kept in place the administration’s opposition to transgender bans being passed by states across the country.
Biden succeeded in angering those on the right opposing transgender athletes in sports and also the transgender activists who decried him for betraying them.
“Biden just betrayed the trans community,” responded transgender activist Erin Reed.
“I’m honestly stunned,” said Reed in further tweets. “It’s actually a roadmap to telling schools how to discriminate.”
“Honestly, this move by Biden to push a rule on trans kids in sports is not only a backwards betrayal, it force us to have to spend our time dealing with god damn sports instead of criminal bans on our healthcare. He could have just done nothing. This is legitimizing transphobia,” replied transgender activist Alejandra Caraballo.
“This is worse than doing nothing, it’s spreading thin already extremely limited time by trans folks to have to deal with this bullshit. They are helping the anti-trans side and legitamizing their transphobic talking points,” Caraballo said in another tweet.
“Appalling failure and abandonment from Bidens white house, which has up to now only ever paid lip service to trans people if it’ll get them good optics, but now is taking clear action siding with our oppressors by stepping on the necks of trans children f*** joe biden,” read another tweet.
“Biden just told trans kids to f*** off. Just told trans adults f*** you too. He’s on the states rights to criminalize our existence side cuz he’s an old ass white Catholic man. Only surprised he bothered to pretend to care during trans week,” said another critic.
“Biden is worthless. He’s always been worthless,” read another tweet.
Despite Biden’s change of policy position, the transgender movement chalked up a victory on Thursday when the Supreme Court ruled against West Virginia to allow a transgender girl to play school sports while a lawsuit continued.
