American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten was mocked and berated online after she exaggerated the circumstances of a teacher who was fired over an inappropriate lesson.
Weingarten posted a news article about a teacher who was fired for reading to her class a graphic novel about the diary of Anne Frank with explicit and inappropriate content. She misled her followers to believe that she was fired for reading the original book.
“Texas teacher fired for reading Diary of Anne Frank to class-THIS Speaks for itself!!!” she wrote in the social media post.
A community note on social media also contradicted Weingarten’s representation of the incident. However, the report from the Houston Chronicle notes that Frank did discuss sexuality in her diary, but that those sections had been removed from the versions that most people have read.
“Randi Weingarten has reached a new low with this lie,” said education activist Corey DeAngelis to KEYE-TV. “The book was a graphic adaptation that included sexual material. The teacher asked young kids to discuss molestation. A special session is coming to Texas next month, as Governor Greg Abbott just announced. It’s time to empower all families with education freedom and hold lying clowns like Randi Weingarten accountable.”
Others lambasted Weingarten for the misleading comment.
“In a shocking turn of events, Community Notes are more trustworthy than Randi Weingarten,” responded Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas.
“Why do you want to force children to discuss graphic molestation aloud in the classroom?” read one critical tweet. “What kind of sick freak wants that?”
“What a disgrace to the memory of Anne Frank. Anything else you want to be-clown yourself with today Randi? For a history teacher you need to check your sources before you tweet!” read another tweet.
Weingarten has been previously criticized for trying to claim that the teachers’ union had been trying to reopen schools during the pandemic when she had worked to shut down schools.
