‘Ted Lasso’ cast to visit White House Monday to discuss the importance of mental health

The cast of “Ted Lasso,” a hit comedy series on Apple TV+, will visit the White House Monday to discuss mental health, Variety reported Sunday evening.

The discussion with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will center on “the importance of mental health to promote overall wellbeing,” the outlet also reported.

“Tomorrow,” President Biden tweeted Sunday evening just ahead of Apple confirming the visit.

The President’s tweet included a photograph of the Oval Office with a simple, apparently hand-drawn poster duct taped just above the doorway. The yellow poster, lettered in blue, simply said “Believe.”

Apple TV+ quickly retweeted Biden. The pinned post on the streaming service’s account says “Just Believe it. Your newest @nike athletes.” The photo appended to the tweet shows AFC Richmond, the fictional English professional soccer club around which the “Ted Lasso” show is based.

Though Apple TV+’s pinned tweet has apparently been live since Tuesday, it had garnered a scant 15 replies, 241 retweets and 2,286 likes as of Sunday around 8:00 p.m.

Cast members participating in the visit include Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Toheeb Jimoh, Cristo Fernandez, Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris and James Lance, CNN reported.

The Bidens have seen some of the show and are familiar with its “message of positivity, hope, kindness, and empathy,” an unnamed White House official told ABC.

The show’s title character is played by actor Jason Sudeikis. Sudeikis also serves as the Emmy Award-winning show’s executive director. On the show, character Ted Lasso is an “affable coach who seeks therapy after grappling with panic attacks,” according to CNN.

The third season of “Ted Lasso” debuted on March 15, Variety reported. It is unclear whether a fourth season will be approved.

In his State of the Union Address February 7, Biden announced a four-part Unity Agenda which included “tackling the mental health crisis.”

In the speech, Biden noted that 40% of American adults report symptoms of anxiety and depression, and children and adolescents reporting those same symptoms had risen nearly 30%.

Biden’s plans to address the mental health and substance abuse challenges facing Americans include protecting kids online, improving school-based mental health, supporting the mental health of the health workforce, promoting youth resilience, enhancing crisis services, and connecting more Americans to care.
