President Donald Trump announced that he would renew the tariff fight with the European Union next week in a Truth Social post Friday.
Trump argued that the EU is not complying with the terms of its trade deal with the U.S. He vowed to increase tariffs on imports of cars and trucks from the European bloc to 25%. In July 2025, he president and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen jointly announced a trade agreement imposing a 15% tariffs on European products. “I am pleased to announce that, based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States,” Trump wrote. “The Tariff will be increased to 25%. It is fully understood and agreed that, if they produce Cars and Trucks in U.S.A. Plants, there will be NO TARIFF.”
“Many Automobile and Truck Plants are currently under construction, with over 100 Billion Dollars currently being invested, A RECORD in the history of Car and Truck Manufacturing. These Plants, staffed by American Workers, will be opening soon — There has never been anything like what is happening in America today!” the president continued.
In the July agreement, the EU further agreed to buy $750 billion of American energy, according to The Hill. Days before the deal, Trump had threatened to impose a 30% tariff on EU goods going into the U.S. on Aug. 1, 2025.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Trump cannot levy tariffs under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA) on Feb. 20, which prompted the president to announce he was imposing new tariffs through different legal avenues on the same day. After the ruling, EU officials said they would not accede to U.S. tariffs increasing, The Hill reported.
Trump’s new tariff announcement comes amid the Iran war, which has triggered a global increase in gas prices and strained relations between the U.S. and multiple European countries.
